That’s me, the Patrologist. Otherwise known as Dr. Seumas Macdonald.

What’s a Patrologist?

Someone who studies patrology, or patristics, that is the study of early Christian writers and theologians between the 1st and around the 7th century. I adopted this name because that's what I completed my PhD in, and because it's a distinct enough word that I can get away with it.

About this site

I've been 'running' the Patrologist website since late 2014, when I retired a previous blog. As a blog, and now newsletter, it's designed as a storehouse of information focusing on the intersection of Classics, Patristics, ancient Christian texts, and primarily the learning and acquisition of historical languages, primarily Ancient Greek and Latin.

In addition, you'll now find a regular source of Greek and Latin texts authored by myself on the site, with audio recordings.

Degrees: BA (Philosophy) Wollongong, BCA (Honours, Creative Writing) Wollongong, BD (Hon) Moore, Graduate Diploma of Humanities in Classical Languages UNE, Grad Cert Arts (Ancient World Studies), Sydney, MTh Mooore, PhD (Ancient History) Macquarie.

I am currently pursuing a BA (Honours) in Gaelic, through Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.

I served in Anglican churches in Sydney between 2004 and 2012. I taught Greek, Hebrew, New Testament, and Church History in Mongolia in 2013-2015. At present I work as a freelance academic, translator, and language instructor.

Since 2016 I have been teaching Ancient Greek and Latin as living languages online. I offer group classes, private tutoring, and develop written resources for these languages.
