In 2027 I plan to offer a number of courses dealing with Homeric Greek, including transitioning from Attic prose, reading courses in the Iliad and Homer, and an RPG set in the Greek Heroic Age.

Other planned courses will appear here in due course.

Standard Courses

For beginners in Ancient Greek, I run a series of 4 classes, Greek 101-104, which cover all of the textbook Athenaze. Each class runs for ten weeks, 1.5 hours per week. Students should expect to spend 3-6hours on their own preparing each week

I try to start a new cohort of Greek 101 each quarterly term.

For Latin I teach a series of 4 classes, Latin 101-104, 1hr a week for ten weeks each, working with Lingua Latina per se Illustrata: Familia Romana.

For more advanced students, I offer a rotating selection of more advanced courses. Each of these is typically a ten-week course at 1hr a week. We have reading courses where we read a text in Latin or Ancient Greek, and discuss it as much as possible in that language.

Previous Courses

Between 2000 and 2026 I have offered 290 classes in communicative Latin and Greek. To provide a taste of what we've covered, here are some of the offerings:

Biblical Tests including Galatians, Esther, Ephesians, Psalms, John, James, 1 Peter, Matthew, 1 Corithians, 1 Maccabees, and Luke.

Greek texts including Plato (Crito, Meno, Timaeus, Lysis, Apology), Anthology of Byzantine Prose, Lucian, Gregory of Nazianzus, Plutarch, Pausanias, various patristic authors, Chambers, Josephus, Boethius (in Greek translation), Thucydides, Herodotus, Origen, and Basil of Caesarea.

Latin texts including Boethius, Ysengrimus, Augustine, William of Rubrick, Tertullian, Cicero, Egeria, Erasmus, Aquinas, Proba, Dhuoda, CS Lewis, anthology of medieval women, a 4-part survey of theological latin from antiquity to the present, Abelard and Heloise, Castellio, Nicolai Klimii iter subterraneum, The Moralized Ovid, Ep to Diognetus, Medieval anthologies, Neo-Latin anthologies, and Petrarch

Roleplaying Games in Ancient Languages including fantasy, Vampire: the Masquerade in 4 different historical settings, Cthulhu in a near-future Mumbai (in ancient Greek!)

FAQ

  • What do I need to enrol in a class?

Classes will be offered via Zoom. You’ll need decent internet, and preferably a headset or microphone and relatively quiet workspace. Students should also ensure they have acquired a copy of the textbook (if there is one) before the class begins.

  • Do I need to have done any Greek/Latin beforehand?

Beginner classes do not assume you have done anything prior, though I do encourage learning the alphabet before Greek 101 and I can help with that. For more advanced classes, it's best to check with me to see if the level is a good fit.

  • Are refunds available?

My refund policy is as follows:

More than 10 days prior, 100%
Less than 10 days prior to the class, 75%
Within the first 2 weeks of class, 50%
After the first 2 weeks, a refund is not available.

  • Are there any scholarships?

I offer a limited number of scholarships for courses. Please contact me if your circumstances preclude the cost of tuition, and we'll do our best to accommodate where appropriate. These are especially appropriate for those traditionally underserved or underrepresented in classics and/or theological studies.

  • Do you offer private tutoring?

I have a fairly limited schedule, but I am sometimes available for individualised tutoring. Alternatively, I am happy to explore running small-group courses for things I'm not currently offering, if you can find at least one other participant to get started with you.
